Crazy hat day, anyone?

We offer a number of social activities during the year. From some silly short activities during tax season (Crazy Hat Day, anyone?) to a longer staff fun day in the fall (axe throwing in 2019!), we like to get together. Food tends to get factored into many of our social activities, which is evidenced in our famous potluck lunches. No one leaves one of these hungry!

A typical day could involve a number of challenging  ...

engagements, such as audits, personal tax returns, notice to reader engagements, and even Firm organized social activities. But don’t take our word for it — check out this snapshot of a day-in-the-life of one of our Senior Staff Accountants:

  • On this day, I arrived at work at 8:30 a.m.. However, if you are an early bird, you have the option of coming to work at 7 a.m. or even as late as 9:30 a.m. given that McCay Duff allows for flexible work hours.
  • I head to my desk to wrap up the audit I was working on the day before. I enjoy the mix of working in and out of the office as this provides excellent variation in the day-to-day work life. As 11 a.m. approaches, I have largely finished wrapping up my audit but I have a few questions left in order to be able to finalize the engagement. The only person who can answer these questions though, is the Engagement Partner. I proceed to schedule a meeting with him before lunch hour and through this face-to-face interaction, we are able to complete the engagement.
  • A group of the younger staff have decided to head out to lunch together on Elgin Street this time, despite there being a ton of options surrounding the office given our location downtown at Elgin and Laurier.
  • When we get back to the office, I take a tax return off the personal tax shelf which is utilized in March and April. This is my 32nd return this year. I know this due to tracking how many returns I complete so that I can hopefully win the Golden Calculator. The Golden Calculator is given out every year to the individual who prepares the most AND highest quality tax returns during tax season.
  • 3 p.m. rolls around and an announcement is made throughout the office. It is the day of the month where we are celebrating birthdays!
  • In the last hour of my day, I get assigned a notice to reader engagement which will likely take me a day to complete. I plan on knocking this off tomorrow before the Pub and Pool night at MacLaren’s hosted by the McCay Duff Social Committee.
  • It’s time to head home on the bus…God I can’t wait for LRT!

Ringo values the company’s philosophy of “Thinking Beyond Numbers” - believing that every employee and their career counts at McCay Duff. Together with the team, he endeavours to make the workplace conducive to a culture of growth and high performance to ensure that our clients receive outstanding service, and employees can fulfill their career goals.

In his role as a Human Resources Manager, Ringo is responsible for the operational management of the department at the Firm. He has developed his expertise over more than 15 years of work with Canadian and multinational companies managing various facets of HR in leadership and executive roles.
