The Internship Program

Over eight months, you will gain relevant experience in our primary public accounting services and be introduced to many competencies related to the CPA designation process.

The Internship will begin with an orientation to acquaint you with our office, management, methodologies, and software systems training that the firm uses. Then we will assign you to work on actual files and be given numerous opportunities to assist senior staff and work independently on assurance engagements, working papers, and corresponding financial statements for a breadth of small and medium-sized clients across different industries. You will also have exposure to the preparation of corporate and personal income tax returns as you work through your first busy season with us.

You can expect to take on real responsibility in a supportive environment whilst benefiting from a wider support network of fellow bullpen staff. Depending on the size and nature of the engagement, Interns report to senior staff members, managers, or the partner in charge in some cases. The level of complexity of assignments will depend on the student’s abilities.

Training and Development

As an intern student, you are encouraged and expected to attend as many educational courses and seminars as possible. Above and beyond your initial onboarding systems training, the office hosts regular internal training seminars and lunch & learn sessions that you will participate in to grow and develop your accounting skills.

Mentorship

You will be assigned a mentor who will be accessible and committed to your professional and personal development during your Internship. Your mentor will provide you with coaching, support and guidance to develop valuable enabling and technical competencies that will form the foundation of your CPA journey. We ask you to take an active and practical role in your assigned engagements fostering plenty of individual responsibility on accounting and tax files.

Key Aspects

  • Perform technical work remotely, in the office or the field on assigned engagements under supervision;
  • Provide support on sections of assurance engagements;
  • Assume responsibility for the completion and accuracy of own work and working papers;
  • Become familiar with firm support systems, including tax, computer systems, policies and standards;
  • Gain experience in public accounting and progress towards writing and passing the CFE;
  • Develop personal skills to effectively communicate with a diverse group of peers, supervisors and clients.
  • Training and instruction on the use of;
  • CaseWare (software specialized for the preparation and documentation of working paper files)
  • TaxPrep (tax return preparation software).
  • iFirm (workflow and client management system)

Our office enjoys a friendly and social atmosphere, and our Interns are a massive part of that. We have many annual events to gather us throughout the year and informal social gatherings (mainly virtual for the time being) to give students and staff a chance to get to know each other better.

What We Look For

  • Strong communication skills, as there will be interaction with partners, staff and clients;
  • Understanding of the Accounting Cycle and basic accounting principles;
  • Passion and enthusiasm to work in public accounting;
  • Ability to meet individual goals and objectives for career development; and,
  • Bilingual in English and French is considered an asset.
