The second post in our series focuses on Senior Manager Andrew Green. Andrew delivers assurance, tax, and business advisory solutions to high net worth individuals, privately held companies, and non-profit organizations.

What do you appreciate most about working at McCay Duff LLP in Ottawa?

The firm endeavours to promote a culture that works hard but also finds time to have fun. The staff is a pleasure to converse with whether it be on a client-related matter or taking time to socialize and strengthening relationships within the team.

What got you interested in pursuing this line of work?

I had exposure to public practice from a young age as my father was a Senior Tax Partner at a Big Four before opening his own practice. The opportunity to work with him was exciting and rewarding.

What aspect of the work you do is the most rewarding?

I thoroughly enjoy being a mentor to the staff and seeing them grow and develop. Given the ever-evolving nature of public practice, it is important for career development to foster and promote continuous learning. 

Tell us a little about your areas of practice/specialty.

I focus on delivering accounting and tax services to privately held companies and non-profit organizations. 

What is your approach to client service?

My approach to client service has always been to know your client. In fostering a strong client relationship, you can identify opportunities for planning and address client inquiries in a timely manner to avoid unpleasant surprises. You become a connector as some inquiries may fall outside the scope of your skill set and you have to rely on your network of fellow professionals – Lawyers, Bankers, Insurance providers and Investment advisors – to develop holistic solutions with the client in mind.

What is a common misconception about your profession? 

There is a misconception in our line of work that all Accountants are created equal. The truth is, we have different temperaments, talents and convictions that go beyond the numbers. Numerical literacy is important but communications, whether it be with staff, fellow managers, partners, or existing and prospective clients, are of paramount importance to delivering quality client service. Our services go beyond the annual financial statements and tax returns, it is about helping individuals and businesses grow and reach their potential.

What do you wish more clients would ask you about? 

Unfortunately, due to the nature of some of our accounting services, it is not unusual for clients to be laser-focused on meeting their reporting deadlines. I believe it is never too early for long-term planning in all aspects of their lives.  Being proactive and making inquiries regarding retirement, will planning and the succession of one’s business can be addressed by the in-depth knowledge and expertise of our team.
